Ever since I can remember I have been passionate about studying the human experience, through the lens of psychology. I took psychology 101 at my local community college, and due to my exceled performance and commitment, was quickly asked to be a peer mentor and tutor to those struggling in future courses. After receiving my Associates Degree in Social and Behavioral Science, I pursued my Bachelors of Arts in Psychology at Ashford University, and graduated with honors, inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society, and honored as Summa Cum Laude.
During my undergraduate career, I wanted to compliment my classroom learning, with hands on experience, thus I sought volunteer opportunities through two agencies, the Women’s Shelter of San Luis Obispo, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Being a state certified Domestic Violence Peer Counselor, I have learned how to listen actively and empathetically, make critical assessments for therapeutic response, develop action plans with clients, and provide appropriate referrals. As a mentor, I saw firsthand the transforming power of human connection. Through my experience, I have learned that in order to make sustainable improvements in another person’s life, long term commitments are necessary. Furthermore, being a mentor taught me the power of community, and the importance of culture in the development of self. I now strive to be an advocate for those in need, to be a community oriented thinker, and exemplify true leadership and humanity through my actions.
Through overcoming my own challenges in life, my educational achievements, and hands on experience, I believe I am on path to making critical contributions to the field of psychology. I pride myself on being a hardworking self-starter, who finds deep satisfaction in investigating evidence-based psychological knowledge and applying it to real life issues. I am motivated to advance my current abilities, through completion of my masters degree in Licensed Clinical Social Work.
